All of our products are shipped with the wood unfinished. Depending on where the doors
will be installed, there are options regarding the appropriate finish coat and
many people have personnal preferences as well.
Tung oil is considered an excellent treatment for any raw wood. A natural oil, it
penetrates well and does not darken the wood. Most hardware stores carry tung oil with
additives which give choices of finished sheen. Pure tung oil also has merit, but is
not available in some stores. For more information on pure tung oil, visit
www.realmilkpaint.com.
Another common preference is oil based urethane, preferably spar varnish. This product provides you with
choices from satin finish to high gloss finish straight from the can. If your door
is going to be exposed to direct sunlight, consider using spar varnish
which contains UV blockers. These products are
available at all paint and hardware stores.
Whichever finish you choose, our doors are sanded and finish-ready and applying the
finish is not difficult.
It is very rare that a stain is applied to mesquite wood, mainly because it is
difficult to improve upon its natural beauty. None of the doors pictured on this
site have been stained.
